Geotextile reinforced seal design in NSW

This paper documents the findings of an investigation into geotextile reinforced sprayed sealing by the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) of New South Wales (NSW). Geotextile reinforced sprayed seals applied in single/single and double/double designs are reviewed and the applications in which geotextile seals are employed in NSW are identified. The effect of the geotextile fabric on the seal structure and the impact of cutter oil in Class 170 is discussed. Geotextile seals were found to be effective in controlling moisture movement in clay pavements and can prolong the life of cracked pavements. Geotextile reinforced sprayed seals perform best when applied in a double/double seal design using a light grade polymer binder. A geotextile fabric creates a shear plane at the interface with the underlying surface and should not be used in high stress situations.
