Belgium Bridges the ETCS Gap
Siemens and Infrabel have teamed to find a solution for railways transitioning from conventional signaling to the European Train Control System (ETCS). Already in use in Switzerland, ETCS is being implemented in Belgium by increasing, for a short time, safety levels, with allowance to full system ETCS migration with relatively little effort later on. TBL1+ (ETCS-hardware based TBL) and ETS Level 1 (the European standard) is scheduled to be equipped on 4,000 signals by Siemens. ETCS Levels 1 and 2 are examined by the author.
