WEAK CLAY PROBLEM SOLVED ON THE MALTON BYPASS

The article describes a new technique for rapid consolidation of weak clay soils. The av-colbond drain is a wick drain consisting of a special non-woven polyester fabric, resistant to acids and basic chemicals in soils and to frost, and having a pore volume in excess of 80 per cent. The installation of the drains under the 8 M high approach embankments of the road bridge over the River Derwent is briefly described. /TRRL/
