PILING: A REVIEW

The article presents a review of piling technology covering developments in pile systems and types. A centre of information for the co-ordination of development work on piling technology is being managed by Ciria in collaboration with the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Building Research Establishment. Bearing pile types are classified as either displacement or non-displacement. Displacement piles are further sub-divided into totally preformed or consisting of driven tubes later filled with concrete. In non-displacement piles the earth is displaced by boring rather than driving and then the borehole is lined with either a temporary or permanent casing. The article discusses a Ciria investigation into these piling systems and presents recommendations for testing pile integrity. /TRRL/
