MAINTENANCE TECHNIQUES FOR ROAD SURFACINGS: ASSESSMENT, CHOICE OF TREATMENT, PLANNING, IMPLEMENTATION

TECHNIQUES D'ENTRETIEN DES REVETEMENTS

Part 1 of the report presents systems of road classification by type of pavement, type of wearing course and road category, and lists road surface deficiencies due to traffic, climate, design and construction techniques. Section 2 reviews the various maintenance methods for restoring skid resistance. It deals with the maintenance of flexible and semi-rigid pavements, maintenance of gravel roads, maintenance of rigid pavements, and maintenance of appurtenances (drainage, slopes and embankments, elimination of vegetation on bituminous surfacings, small structures). Section 3 concerns the planning organisation and conduct of maintenance work. Section 4 is devoted to specific problems of urban road maintenance. Section 5 comments on several major issues which have to be taken into account when improving existing systems. Section 6 presents a compilation of recent research projects in various countries and lists the major research needs in the road maintenance field. A catalogue of road surface deficiencies is published under separate cover. /TRRL/
