THE DESIGN AND BEHAVIOUR OF ELASTOMERIC BEARING PADS

The practical applications of elastomeric bearing pads are reviewed, with particular reference to road and rail bridges. Design methods commonly used in South Africa are discussed. Aspects such as the properties of elastomers and the behaviour of pads are dealt with as well as testing and the interpretation of test results. Experience to date indicates that a well-designed and manufactured bearing pad should have a maintenance-free life of the order of 80 years. /Author/TRRL/
