California Highway Barrier Aesthetics

This report presents current barrier design options for highway designers. The objective is to encourage appropriate aesthetic considerations for developing visually pleasing context sensitive solutions for highway projects. Barrier types and design considerations discussed in this report include: 1) Thrie Beam Barrier; 2) Three-Cable Barrier; 3) Type 60 Concrete Barrier, including approved concrete barrier aesthetics and developing textures and patterns; 4) Timber Guardrail; 5) Precast Concrete Guardwall; 6) Stone Masonry Guardrail; and, 7) Barriers and Landscaping. Included for each of the different types of barriers is a description of the barrier and a discussion of advantages, disadvantages, and associated costs.
