ADAPTATION OF THE CONSTRUCTION METHOD TO THE ROCK CONDITIONS IN THE ARLBERG HIGHWAY TUNNEL - WEST

Because of the hard nature of the rock, a division of the driving between the calotte and the road, as well as simultaneous following construction was proposed. Because of the unfavourable geological conditions, and the associated carriageway problems, ventilation problems, the available equipment and the simultaneous work following in sequence, a decision was made in favour of rail type operation. It was possible to adapt the available capacities of plant to the differing driving rates. The excavation of the entire cross section was carried out in seven sections. Depending on the rock conditions the securing of the tunnel was achieved by guniting or the insertion of roadway arches in several pieces, as well as by anchoring. In order to overcome the varying levels of rock pressure encountered, the anchor lengths and distribution were varied, and the spacings of the roadway arches and the strength of Gunite were altered. Of greatest importance were the convergence measurements for checking the safety measures. These decided the extent of subsequent anchoring in the case of continuing deformation. /TRRL/
