DETERMINATION OF THE LOAD BEARING CAPACITY OF SOIL BY MEANS OF THE CBR METHOD FOLLOWING FREEZING AND THAWING IN A LABORATORY

The recommendations for pavement design derived from the AASHO test based on the determination of the CBR coefficients, are checked by the determination of the behaviour of the soil following freezing and thawing. The results of the laboratory tests are explained. These lead to new bases for the design. A freezing apparatus dating from the years 1967 and 1971 was used in the extensive test programme. In two parallel series of tests for rapid and for slow freezing, 38 soils both from the subsoil and from the pavement material were subjected to AASHO tests. The dependence of the CBR coefficients on the compaction work, the compaction water content, the water immersion and the speed of freezing was determined. It was shown, that it is possible to reproduce the field coefficients of the AASHO sub-grade in the laboratory. In the case of sand layers, the correlation was not, however, sufficiently satisfactory. New proposals are advanced for the determination of the governing CBR values of the subsoil or the subgrade for the design of the pavement for the normal summer/autumn period and the thawing period as well as for the suitability of gravel as a lower road base. The investigations have, furthermore, shown that the load bearing properties of the soil during the thawing period may be determined more accurately. /TRRL/
