EFFECTIVE DRAINAGE. JUST A TECHNICAL TASK?

WIRKSAME ENTWAESSERUNG. NUR EINE TECHNISCHE AUFGABE?

With reference to further literature it is shown how important it is to provide adequate drainage in the construction of roads and country lanes, and the significance that is attached to the knowledge of hydraulic and geological conditions as well as the relationships of soil mechanics. According to the observations of the author a large proportion of damage is due to disregard of fundamental questions of water resources management and hydrology, especially in the field of low-cost road construction. Starting with the apportionment of rain falls into evaporation, vegetation, surface water and ground water, definitions are given for the various forms of water in the soil. The path of the water in the soil and its influence on the properties of the soil is described. It is followed by recommendations for draining surface and ground water with information on appropriate specifications and literature. /TRRL/
