Hyderabad Metro Rail Project

Hyderabad is a major industrial center in India. However, the rapid growth of the city, rising income levels and the lack of good public transportation have resulted in a phenomenal increase in personal vehicles. To alleviate this strain on the current transportation infrastructure, the development of a metro rail system in Hyderabad has recently been approved. The metro will have 3 high-density traffic corridors, which will span over 67 km. This article highlights the selection process for bids, financial issues and proposed fare structure. To date, 5 international consortia of companies have prequalified as prospective bidders for the build-operate-transfer project. Alignment and station locations have been chosen and lands required for the project have been identified. The project developer will be chosen in December 2007 and construction work will commence in early 2008.
