Sacramento Airport Expansion Features $1.3-Billion Terminal and Concourse

With air passenger travel to and from Sacramento, California, growing on average by four percent a year, the airport is developing a new terminal that will occupy 391,000 sq. ft., along with a 280,000 sq. ft. air-side concourse building. The terminal-concourse project is budgeted at $1.3 billion. Some unique engineering challenges resulting from a high water table because of its location close to the Sacramento River are described, including the need for a waterproof "bathtub" structure that will be tied down to resist the upward buoyancy forces exerted by the water table. Other unique aspects of the design include exposed structural steel elements rather than fireproofed ones. Floor-to-ceiling glass will offer views of the outdoors. A number of other elements that will create a signature look are also described.
