Stuttgart Parking Garage Spans Major Highway

A new parking garage at Stuttgart's airport, constructed for a new trade fair complex, uses a bridge-like design to guide traffic from an adjacent section of the autobahn to the new complex. The link must accommodate 80,000 vehicles per day, and the garage holds 4,000 cars in a two-fingered structure. Spirals at the front end of the garage serve as entry and exit ramps that connect directly to the autobahn. The structure is not completely symmetrical, to account for the sloping elevation of the site, and the garage roofs are vegetated. The support system for the structure is described. To prevent backups during peak use, there is an electronic guidance system that directs traffic to one segment or another.
