Nanoscale Characterization of Cementitious Materials

It is widely believed that at the nanoscale material properties affect the fundamental properties of concrete. Hence, understanding the nanoscale properties first is necessary to improve concrete and cement properties. Sample preparation techniques were developed in this research for hardened cement paste nano- and microstructure imaging using atomic force microscopy in this research. Along with in-place scanning probe microscopy imaging, a special nonindenter type has been used for determining nanoscale local mechanical properties, including the Young's modulus of the interfacial transition zone.
