The Lane Cove Tunnel: inspired emotions

By the time this paper is presented, the 3.6 km Lane Cove Tunnel completing a missing link in the Sydney Orbital road network, will still not be fully operational. Until the tunnel operates with the surface works completed, the merits of issues raised prior to its opening cannot be fully reassessed. This paper considers the change in 2016 AADT traffic projections from 58,500 vehicles per day in the 1999 feasibility study to 159,500 Vehicles per day in the 2002 contract relative to tunnel capacity. The paper also touches on community issues of air quality / filtration, traffic impacts, lack of transparency, conditions of approval, contract issues, community consultation processes and the role played by local government and public works professionals.
