THE ENVIRONMENT, A PROBLEM FOR TRANSPORT

L'ENVIRONNEMENT, PROBLEME POUR LES TRANSPORTS

The author examines in turn the effects of various modes of transport on the environment: noise, pollution due to oxides of carbon and of oxygen, dust, odours, fumes, visual impact, space demand, ecological effects and the effects of cutting through human habitats. He outlines the different preventive measures open to the public authorities: restriction of heavy traffic in certain zones, taxes, specifications or standards, legislation, drafting of environmental impact reports. The author finally describes the various measures for public participation and information which are necessary, because it is not possible to devise policies for improvement of the environment and the insertion of a transport infrastructure, based purely on technical decisions. /TRRL/
