THERMODYNAMIC INVESTIGATIONS INTO TUNNEL FIRES

THERMODYNAMISCHE UNTERSUCHUNGEN VON TUNNELBRAENDEN

The paper is a supplement to research work on fire investigations in a tunnel. The distribution of combustion gas and carbon monoxide volumes together with the energy freed are established. This gives an insight into the physical reactions which lead to temperature and gas concentrations present at particular measuring stations in the tunnel. In this way a change in the fire conditions for various ventilation types or operational variations can be assessed. Furthermore the heat transmission on the walls can be accurately investigated for a tunnel with longitudinal air flow and a method is given for calculating the combustion gas temperatures within the tunnel space in advance. The heat effects on a human body within the combustion gas stream were obtained using an appropriate method of calculation. /TRRL/
