Measured by its activity, the stratified charge engine with divided combustion chamber is significantly overweight compared to those with an open combustion chamber. Fundamental investigations are concerned with the influence of stratification degree upon emission. By the use of bombing apparatus, e.g. single stroke machines, an attempt was made, using high speed photography, to obtain detailed information on the process of burning the stratified charge. Investigations have been made into the reasons for the special emission qualities of the stratified charge engine with the flushed pre-combustion chamber and are concerned with the stratified charge specific combustion processes. New or further developed stratified charge combustion systems were then described. Presentations were then made of a stratified charging system with a divided combustion chamber based on the Ricardo Comet MKV chamber configuration, new results of the MCP process, processes with direct injection into the open combustion chamber, results of timing and optimisation work on a stratified charge engine according to the "Broderson" process and new aspects of accelerated combustion by use of the stratified charge principle by means of the Russian-developed lag process. Integrated engine and vehicle concepts were presented by the car firms. To show the connection between fuel use and emission there was a comparison between the BLMc stratified charge engine and the otto-four stroke motor. Daimler-Benz compared two stratified charge concepts (divided and open combustion chambers) with the otto and diesel engines. Man investigated the influence of different parameters upon the fm-process. Reports were given on the optimisation of the sks system by Porsche and on the PCI concept by VW. /TRRL/
