A REPORT ON THE RELIABLE MEASUREMENT OF ALIPHATIC ALDEHYDE IN ENGINE EXHAUST GASES

EIN BEITRAG ZUR ZUVERLAESSIGEN MESSUNG DER ALIPHATISCHEN ALDEHYDE IN MOTORABGASEN

The measurement of aliphatic aldehyde in exhaust gases with the assistance of the mbth method has caused difficulties world wide, because its reproduction leaves much to be desired. These difficulties were then taken as the reason to develop an improved exhaust sampling technique (trichter method) for the mbth method and to introduce its details. As a result of selected trials it is illustrated, in which manner and to what extent, measurement faults by the application of customary exhaust sampling could be technically developed and how these faults could be avoided in the suggested method. In addition to its simplicity and speed of handling on the test stand, the new trichter method showed up well by its preciseness and ease of reproduction (better than plus or minus 5%) and not least by the fact that from the principle of the trichter method there is always a guaranteed aldehyde sampling efficiency of 100%. This is of significance because when applying the traditional method the collection efficiency can lie between 69 and 100%, so that the measurement results, into which the collection efficiency is directly entered, are always clouded by this factor of uncertainty. Finally the limits of the mbth method which is conditioned by the influence of so2 and no(x) are outlined and discussed. /TRRL/
