PROPOSALS FOR IMPROVED DESIGN OF BRIDGE PIERS

VORSCHLAEGE ZUR BESSEREN GESTALTUNG VON BRUECKENPFEILERN

An improved design of bridge pier is proposed which is intended to help prevent scour. This is achieved on the one hand by means of a specially widened and hydraulically shaped foundation which is extended to cover the areas subject to erosion. Standing wave and undertow are dissipated on the concrete platform of this base. On the other hand special structures are provided on the base to alter the flow conditions. These so-called hydraulic boxes or grids have semi-circular or parabolic profile and are provided with slotted inlet and outflow openings, which separate the water flowing through them into individual streams and thereby lead to the disintegration of the standing wave and the elimination of the downstream eddies. /TRRL/
