The role of sustainable asset management and related asset data in supporting changing community demands for future local government services

The immediate challenge for asset management practitioners within a modern local government entity is determining how to actively promote and support a viable, sustainable and vibrant community that is capable of defining and managing its future needs within a constantly changing and demanding environment. The performance of today's asset managers, based on decisions determined from analysis of current and/or historical information, will be tested and judged by future generations for whom the relevance of those decisions has no meaning. This paper sets out the journey that the City of Melbourne administration has undertaken to establish a sound framework for strategic asset management decision making and the means by which Council will acknowledge and address community and stakeholder requirements for changing service needs into the future.
