THE PROFESSIONAL IMAGE AND ROLE OF DRIVING INSTRUCTORS AND THEIR EFFECTS ON DRIVER TRAINING - CONSIDERATIONS FOR ANALYSING THE SOCIAL RELATIONSHIP BEHAVIOUR OF DRIVING INSTRUCTORS WHEN INSTRUCTING

BERUFSBILD UND BERUFSROLLE DES FAHRLEHRERS UND IHRE AUSWIRKUNGEN AUF DIE FAHRERAUSBILDUNG--UEBERLEGUNGEN ZUR ANALYSE SOZIALER ZUSAMMENHAENGE DES VERHALTENS VON FAHRLEHRERN IM UNTERRICHT

As with every type of instructor - or teacher behaviour, the behaviour of driving instructors has considerable effect on the performance and success of instruction and training. There are two different aspects of instructor behaviour - the inner or micro aspect in which the manner of behaviour is the focal point and is determined primarily by the teaching situation and the instructor's conceptions regarding educational interaction and communication - or the external or macro aspect in which instructor behaviour is seen as a determinant of the remaining social environment, with its effects primarily on the instructor's awareness and understanding of his role. An analysis of the social relationships of driving instructor behaviour indicates that the manner of behaviour in this area is influenced by professional self opinion co-determined to a large extent by their status professionally. This self opinion is negative in as much as those in the profession traditionally regard themselves only as instructors, but not as traffic educators; an increased requirement of their professional activity which now and in the future must be expected of them. With this change of emphasis on their professional activity, requiring higher qualifications, tensions can exist between their status and their self opinion together with conflicts which affect their professional work. Various measures are proposed to avoid or reduce these. /TRRL/
