PRINCIPLES ON WHICH TO BASE THE DESIGN OF OIL SEPARATORS FOR HIGHWAYS IN WATER CATCHMENT AREAS

The research project called for the collection and evaluation of the sources necessary for revising and updating a section of the "Specifications for highway construction measures in water catchment areas". By means of the more recent studies not only the factors influencing flow to catch basins have been revised but an attempt has also been made at quantifying more exactly the parameters affecting the design of soil separators in order that the effectiveness and economy of these structures may be improved. In addition to the study and evaluation of literature, enquiries and similar forms of investigation have been made with experienced highway construction practicians involved in this field. The results from these efforts together with statistical data (accident frequency, quantities of oil leakage, rainfall-intensity-duration-frequency relationships, etc.) form the background against which theoretical probability calculations have been carried out. The revised controlling design factors have finally been compiled and alternative measures suggested together with proposals for the setting-up of a list of criteria by means of which the use of differently weighted measures can be discussed. /Author/
