INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE LAYOUT OF ACCELERATION AND DECELERATION LANES TOGETHER WITH WEAVING AND MANOUEVERING SECTIONS

Literature on this subject to date was sifted and arranged in order. Model representations and theoretical assumptions were checked by separate investigation and considerations to see what influence the scatter of values for input parameters from the adopted design assumptions has on the resulting geometric solution. As a result a recommendation for draft design guidelines is given which is suitable for dual carriageway roads. The design geometry for the different elements of the road is given in relation to traffic density, design speed, exit driving speed and cross-fall. Similarly actual efficiency and 'level of service' are included in the considerations. Recommendations are made for indicating acceleration lanes and weaving sections using traffic signs. /TRRL/
