IMPROVEMENTS OF REAR LIGHTING OF VEHICLES BY ADDITIONAL HIGH LEVEL BRAKE LIGHTS

In live driving experiments the reaction times of drivers in convoy were measured. The measurements were carried out with and without high level brake lights. Significant results of the investigations showed that with the application of high level brake lights the reaction time of the drivers in convoy could be decreased considerably. For the driver of the 5th vehicle for example, for night driving and day driving, there is a reduction in reaction time of about 40%. It is not necessary to fit each vehicle with additional high level brake lights. It would be sufficient however to fit every 5th or 6th vehicle within a convoy. /TRRL/
