THE EFFECT OF THE QUANTITY OF POOR AGGREGATE ON THE PROPERTIES OF HARDENED CONCERTE, IN PARTICULAR ON ITS FROST RESISTANCE

EINFLUSS DES SCHLECHTKORNGEHALTES AUF DIE EIGNENSCHAFTEN DES ERHAERTETEN BETONS, INSBESONDERE AUF SEINE FROSTBESTAENDIGKEIT

The compressive and tensile beinding strengths and the elastic modulus of concrete of strengths b225 and b400 were checked under conditions of frost, with and without air entraining, both with poor aggregate above and below 4 mm grain size. The reduction in compressive and bending strength for the various additional materials used was found to occur at proportions of poor aggregate up to 50% by weight, that is 10% by weight of the total mix. With the increasing ratio of poor aggregate the static and dynamic elastic moduli sink. With the exception of concrete class b225 without air entraining, with poor aggregate in the sand region, all other concretes passed the frost resistance test as set out in Austrian standard b3303. The static and dynamic elastic moduli also remained, in all cases, above the limiting value for frost resistance and at about 90% of their initial values, after 50 freeze-thaw cycles. Frost damaging properties only occur for grain sizes up to 1 mm.
