THE ASSIMILATION OF INFORMATION ON ROAD TRAFFIC AND THE FUNCTION OF THE SHORT TERM MEMORY. ENGINEERING PSYCHOLOGICAL AND CYBERNETIC ASPECTS OF THE THEORY AND FORM OF ROAD TRAFFIC

INFORMATIONSVERARBEITUNG IM STRASSENVERKEHR UND DIE FUNKTION DES KURZZEITGEDAECHTNISSES. INGENIEURPSYCHOLOGISCHE UND KYBERNETISCHE ASPEKTE AUR THEORIE UND GESTALTUNG DES STRASSENVERKEHRS

Following a description in various sections of the idea of human failure as a cause of road accidents, sensory assimilation performance and capacity of the human information assimilation system, functional qualities of the short term memory and communication problems in road traffic in connection with the influx and storage capacity of the short term memory, it is established that a reduction must be made in the large quantity of information which a road user is expected to understand. Part of the problem is how to ensure that the information is so reduced that only the irrelevant information is excluded. A series of investigations cited lead to theoretical conclusions about the possibilities of how the information may be guided to the user. This is possible: (1) by a reduction of the range of the source of information, i.e. of their enclosing elements (e.g. traffic signs), (2) whilst arranging for the appearance of different signals one and the same source should be introduced for information having statistically equal probability and unequal probability, (3) functional dependence (coupling) would be introduced between signals. In all three ways an entropy condition can result and linked to that there is a reduction in information, which manifests itself in a reduction of the human reaction time. Finally consideration is given to conclusions about the form of information systems such as control and direction systems for highway traffic and for further basic research into the cybernetic and psychological aspects. /TRRL/
