THE BEHAVIOUR OF SMALL SCALE BOX GIRDERS OF STIFFENED PLATE CONSTRUCTION

An attempt has been made to examine the behaviour of trapezoidal box girders of welded stiffened plate construction, by load tests on small scale girders. The influence of a reinforced concrete deck has also been examined. Partial sucess was achieved with a simple cantilever section and more positive information about the mode of buckling of the bottom flange was obtained by subsequently testing the same as an eccentrically loaded column. Valuable data were obtained from extensive strain gauging of the flange, in particular abouth the redistribution of stress with increasing load and about the development of buckling and the mode of failure of the girder. Comparision with methods of calculation recently proposed for determining the ultimate load condition of flanges, would suggest that small scale girders can be produced which are closely representative of their protoptypes. /Author/TRRL/
