ALINEMENT, CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE OF HIGHWAYS IN WATER CATCHMENT AREAS

LINIENFUHRUNG, BAU UND UNTERHALTUNG VO STRABEN IN WASSERSCHUTZ- UND WASSERGEWINNUNGSGEBIETEN

The need for protection of a water catchment plant must already be considered at the stage of planning and designing a highway project. A matter of importance is an alinement which is safe from the standpoint of traffic safety. Danger water can be reduced by a variety of constructional measures. In constructing a highway, it has to be kept in mind that waters are basically unprotected. Therefore protective measures are necessary and must be provided by means of appropriate design features. From the standpoint of highway operation, it has to be observed that de-icing salts, fertilizers, and such are used with care and according to regulations Certain traffic restrictions may also have to be enforced to avoid danger to water catchment areas. The costs of making good for the losses resulting from nonusable water catchment areas can roughly be assessed on the basis of the statistical means available. If at all possible the permanent closing down of any water catchment plant should be avoided. /Author/
