EFFECTS OF STERN BLUNTNESS AND SURFACE ROUGHNESS ON VISCOUS RESISTANCE

The total viscous resistance of an ellipsoid with revolution of length/diameter ratio equal to 6.67, and another body which is length/diameter ratio equal to 6.67, and another body which is very similar but with a pointed tail was estimated. For the ellipsoid the potential flow is given by a known analytical solution. Whilst for the pointed stern body it can be calculated from a suitable axial source-sink distribution. The calculated body-surface velocity distributions are shown. Order from NSFI as No. 16394.
