SELECTED PORTS--DEVELOPMENT STUDY

Nine main trends in port development are reviewed: 1) cotainerization, 2) the need for more open area, 3) lack of space in many leading ports, 4) stagnation or decline in some leading ports, 6) huge investments in some ports, notably in the Middle East, 7) considerable over-capacity in Middle East container facilities, 8) the rapid increase in port congestion followed by a rapid decrease in some areas, and 9) the general transfer of shipping from developed to developing countries.
