The technical development of ships has successively given rise to increased problems with regard to the acoustical environment on board. At the same time the demands for an improved working environment on board have been given greater importance. Based on the results of comprehensive research project, a number of aspects are given with regard to the initiation and transmission of sound with special emphasis on methods for the calculation of sound levels in various locations. The calculation method is used to demonstrate the effect of a number of noise-abatement measures on four ships of various types and sizes. Order from BSRA as No. 49,851.
