THE USE OF SAFETY BARRIERS ON HIGHWAYS

IMPIEGO DELLE BARRIERE DI SICUREZZA NELLE SEZIONE STRADALE

This article presents an extensive review of the types of safety barriers (including crash cushions) in use, and analyzes the criteria governing their design, development and installation. The author suggests that the universal acceptance of safety barriers in conjunction with their ease of installation, frequently leads to their use in situations where they do not provide the greatest degree of safety and protection. The article emphasizes that the safety of barriers depends on their correct use, and shows through an analysis of barrier installations in tunnels, on flyovers and embankments, at narrow angled junctions and on central reserves, that other measures (allied to layout, gradient, and width of central reserve) can provide a greater degree of safety in some cases. /TRRL/
