TWO-WHEELED VEHICLES IN TRANSPORT PLANNING

LE "DUE RUOTE" NELLA PIANIFICAZIONE DEI TRANSPORTI

In 1976 there were 4700000 motorcycles (including mopeds) and 15500000 bicycles in use in Italy as compared to 17174000 automobiles (buses, cars, vans). This article presents tabulated and comparative analyses of the growth, production and operating costs of two-wheeled and four-wheeled forms of transport. Emphasizing the economic and space and energy saving advantages of two-wheeled transport, it is suggested that "cycle and ride" as opposed to "park and ride" should play a greater part in modal split solutions. /TRRL/
