DETERMINING THE DENSITY OF EMBANKMENTS BY MEANS OF THE STATIC PENETROMETER

LA DETERMINAZIONE DELLA DENSITA DEI RILEVATI STRADALI MEDIANTE IL PENETROMETRO STATICO

The research reported concerns the use of the static penetrometer for measuring the density of road embankments. The method described provides a simple and rapid means of continuous measurement through the whole depth of the embankment, thus enabling an overall evaluation of consolidation characteristics. The relationship between dry density and the specific peak penetrometer resistance is determined, as well as the soil parameters which govern this relationship. The procedure is applied to the determination of the consolidation properties of a highway embankment, showing the variation of these properties in relation to the height of the embankment and to the measuring position in the cross section. /TRRL/
