SQUARE OFF THE ABUTMENTS FOR SKEWED SEGMENTAL BRIDGES

The author describes an alternative method of design using squared-off abutments that can be used to simplify bridge detailing and achieve economy. The method permits the superstructure to be square in plan and makes it possible to use a square bridge layout that facilitates framing, placement of steel, jointing, concreting and most other construction operations. The concept is particularly suitable for prestressed segmental bridges. The basic concept of squaring off the deck and having a squared-off abutment is shown.
