LARGE BLOCK METHOD FOR CONSTRUCTING SUPERSTRUCTURES OF LONG BRIDGES -- TRANSITION IN ERECTION PROCESSES FROM THE RYOGOKU BRIDGE TO THE OSHIMA BRIDGE --

Experience with the use of the large-block method for building long bridges is reviewed here. Japan's Nippon Kokkam (NKK) used this method to erect the Ryogoku Bridge, as well as some other bridges. Recently, the company employed the large-block method to construct the Oshima Bridge which, because of rapid currents and harsh natural conditions could not be built by conventional methods. Advantages of the methods and also some problems associated with it are discussed.
