ZURICH EXPERIENCE IN THE ASSESSMENT OF DRIVING APTITUDE

DIE ZUERICHERISCHEN ERFAHRUNGEN BEI DER BEURTEILUNG DER FAHRTAUGLICHKEIT

For the past 50 years aptitude evaluations have been carried out on drivers at the Institute of the University of Zurich. More than 1000 patients have been studied annually. The large number of control assessments has made it possible, in many cases, to produce a longitudinal profile of a disease and driving skills. In the last ten years, the data obtained from patients have been systematically evaluated and compared with data obtained from a healthy control group of comparable age structure and similar driving experience. Individual experimental analyses were also undertaken (e.g. Disturbance of consciousness, epilepsy, pyschopathy, twilight vision, vision in one eye, sense of colour, stereoscopic vision, deafness, amputations, diseases of the cervical vertebrae, multiple sclerosis, conditions resulting from apoplexy, heart and blood pressure illnesses, diabetes). The driving aptitude of drivers following an attack of schizophrenia and following heart attacks is also reported. /TRRL/
