HAS THE STUDDED TYRE STILL GOT A CHANCE? STATE OF THE ART OF TYRE DEVELOPMENT - CONFERENCE REPORT

HAT DER SPIKESREIFEN NOCH CHANCEN? ZUM HEUTIGEN STAND DER REIFENENTWICKLUNG-TAGUNSBERICHT

The papers given at this conference were intended to provide information on both the viewpoints of various governments and on the present state of technology. Outside the Federal Republic of Germany, studded tyres are forbidden in the European countries of the democratic republic of Germany, Holland and Romania. Where absolute bans are not in force, limitations on use generally are. It was reported from Scandinavia, that studded tyres cannot be done without, as experience shows that with the increasing use of such tyres, the accident rate dropped at the onset of winter ice. As regards the present state of technology the following papers were presented: the physical bases for frictional connection of tyres on icy pavements; further development of highway pavements and studded tyres; experience with the new regulations in connection with the effectiveness and wear of modern studs in France; state of development of studs; influence of studded tyres on road wear. Other papers delivered at the conference included: problems in the production of studs as a result of the various national specifications; demands on studs and tyre manufacturers arising from the international rationalisation of specifications; trends in the development of studded tyres from the viewpoint of the tyre manufacturer. /TRRL/
