NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING OF TYRES BY THE METHOD OF DOUBLE EXPOSURE HOLOGRAPHY

Equipment is described which enables tyres to be tested by the method of double exposure holography. The test procedure takes place automatically in four steps, each step covering 90 degrees of the tyre circumference. With the aid of the equipment all current tyres for private vehicles, goods vehicles and aircraft can be investigated. It is shown that in particular bonding faults from 1 mm diameter can be found even when the fault is deep inside the structure of the tyre. The procedure closes a gap which had been left open in the methods known so far. The use of holographic test techniques for tyre investigations will go beyond the mere determination of air entrainments, and it will concentrate on the following aims: assessment of tyre fatigue, assessment of construction measures and assessment of tyre uniformity. Holographic test methods will supplement conventional test methods, insofar as they will increase certainty in the assessment of the service life of the tyre, provide a considerably faster test result and improve the capability of producing evidence in connection with tests and checks of all types. /TRRL/
