THE RADIOTELEPHONE TO HELP TRAFFICABILITY IN WINTER

LE RADIOTELEPHONE AU SERVICE DE LA VIABILITE HIVERNALE

The growing importance of winter traffic has led the DRCR (Directorate of Traffic and Highways) to take measures aimed at maintaining the best possible conditions in bad weather. The "winter service" should take into account traffic flow on the routes considered and climatic conditions. Different levels of service are, therefore, defined, the highest level of service (level S1) being for motorways and main national highways. Requirements for a winter service of S1 level are as followsL equipment for spreading chemicals and for clearing snow; maintenance centres sited at intervals of 25 to 60 km; a radiotelephone network indispensable to ensure the safety and speed of operation of the winter maintenance service. The study, supply, installation, the administrative procedure for liaising with the Ministry of Posts & Telegraphs, the radiotelephone network servicing routes of S1 level, have all been the responsibility of the technical service for road lighting. This service has even been responsible up to recently, for almost all the specialised personnel and maintenance training functions. The pert method is used for the corresponding activities and from this an annual maintenance report is prepared (the budget for these activities increased by 7 million francs in 1976). Action has recently been taken to draw up a plan for maintenance and training which would be put into operation in 1978. /TRRL/
