TEST RIG EXPERIMENTS AND ANALYSES WITH REFERENCE TO THE LATERAL DYNAMICS OF PNEUMATIC TYRES

PRUEFSTANDSVERSUCHE UND BERECHNUNGEN ZUR QUERDYNAMIK VON LUFTREIFEN

Measurements of lateral forces and moments at the wheel rim are presented for a modern steel cord tyre in relation to time and frequency. The results point to properties which are not compatible with the well-known theories of path dependent origin of the lateral forces. A new tyre model is proposed, which consists of a rigid belt of masses with three degrees of freedom. The occurrence of oblique lateral forces in plane of contact is described by the theories of B. Von Schlippe and R. Dietrich. They cause a restoring moment, which is augmented by a turning moment arising from dynamic impulses. The reactions of the tyre on the rim were calculated with the aid of the model and in the time and frequency range showed good agreement with the experimental values. /TRRL/
