TYRES AND ROAD SAFETY - CONFERENCE REPORT ON THE STATE OF THE ART OF TYRE DEVELOPMENT

REIFEN UND VERKEHRSSICHERHEIT - TAGUNGSBERICHT ZUM HEUTIGEN STAND DER REIFENENTWICKLUNG

It has not been possible to date to analyse theoretically the most important properties of vehicle tyres. Their construction has been based on experience, gained from numerous tests. On the occasion of this seminar, the following problems and practical solutions were proposed and discussed: mixing of tyres, tyre grip on wet road surfaces, aquaplaning behaviour of winter tyres, interaction of disc wheels and tyres, tyre selection criteria, adaptation of tyres to vehicles, the results of comparative tyre tests, influence of air pressure on the driving characteristics and stopping capacity of car tyres. Questions of depth of tyre tread and air pressure were discussed and it was shown that the car driver generally realises the effects of inadequate depth of profile as well as recommended tyre pressures for his vehicle. Practical tests have, however, shown that they do not react accordingly. /TRRL/
