The Franco Tosi hydraulic reversing coupling provides a solution to the problem of achieving astern manoeuvring power from uni-rotational turbo-machinery. The coupling has a SSS clutch to provide zero slip ahead transmission when at sea. The firm of Franco Tosi of Legnano, which has been making Vulcan hydraulic couplings for many years, restudied the possibility of using separate ahead and astern hydraulic torque converters as adopted over 70 years ago, primarily for speed reduction by Fottinger and revived in the late 1950s with BTH-Pametrada transmission for reversal in Shell's gas-turbine tanker Auris. The propulsion plant of the Italian sea control helicopter-carrier Guiseppe Garibaldi will incorporate four of these invertors. Order from BSRA as No. 49,823.
