MATERIALS USAGE AND ENERGY IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY

Energy costs impact the materials selection process for passenger cars, light trucks and vans in two ways: (1) direct cost of the energy necessary to produce the material and (2) the energy saved by lowering fuel consumption over the life of the vehicle. These two energy costs are compared for materials distributions on current and future vehicles. The major factors that enter the competition among materials as a result of energy pressures and trends in materials usage that result are presented.
