IN SITU RECYCLING OF BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS

The author shows that the failure of bituminous pavements is largely due to the hardening of the asphalt in the upper three quarters of an inch. Heater scarification will loosen this portion of the pavement so that the asphalt can be softened by application of the proper amount of an asphaltic modifier. After recompaction the pavement will have several more years of useful life. The procedures for making this type of treatment successful are outlined.
