DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF ARIZONA'S PRESTRESSED CONCRETE PAVEMENT

This report describes the first prestressed concrete pavement placed in Arizona. Included in the report is a detailed account of the design, construction and placement methods used. The purpose of this project was employ pavement prestressing techniques on a production basis with the contract awarded under competitive bidding. Thirty prestressed slabs were placed on the roadway, each with a nominal length of 122 m which were prestressed by the post-tensioning method. The concrete was placed with a slip-form paver which also guided the prestressing strands into the pavement by feeding them through J-bars attached to the front of the paver.
