EGYPTIAN PORTS, ITS PRESENT AND FUTURE STATUS

The background of the country and of the ports and port planning are described. The section on Alexandria discusses its situation and access, the general and specialised facilities and the traffic. Traffic details and forecasts are given for the years from 1974 to 1980. The I.B.R.D. rehabilitation project is described in some detail. Port Saied and Mersa Matrouh are considered in similar depth with special reference to the new port at Mersa Matrouh. Under Part 4 the main Red Sea ports of Suez, (Port Ibrahim and Port Adabiyah) and Safaga are described with a resume of existing facilities and of the proposed rehabilitation programme for the facilities at Suez. Cargo forecasts are given for both Safago and Suez for 1980 and 2000. New port projects are examined next, in particular for the ports of Dekheila and Damietta. The final parts discuss the development strategy for the ports for 1980 through 2000 and give conclusions.
