EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE SLOSHING PRESSURE OF RECTANGULAR TANKS: 1ST REPORT

Owing to difficulties in the theoretical approach to the study of sloshing pressures in ships' partly-filled cargo-tanks, an experimental approach is usually adopted, and in this paper the Authors describe an experimental study for which a pitching simulator (which also simulates rolling) and a sloshing-data analyser were developed. The experiments described in this 1st Report were made with four rectangular tank models, one with no internal members and the others with different swash bulkheads, and the damping effect of the swash bulkheads and the influence of vertical acceleration were investigated. The experimental equipment and procedures are described, and the results of the investigation are presented. The distribution modes of the dynamic and impulsive pressures on the swash and end bulkheads and on the top of the tank are clarified, and it is confirmed quantitatively that swash bulkheads are effective in decreasing dynamic and impulsive pressures. Tentative experimental formulae are derived for the dynamic pressure generated on the immersed parts of tanks having a bulkhead. Order from BSRA as No. 49,400.
