EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE SLOSHING PRESSURE OF RECTANGULAR TANKS: 2ND REPORT

In continuation of the work described in the 1st Report pitching tests were carried out with six rectangular tanks, all having internal frame members, to determine the damping effect of the internal structure and the influence of vertical acceleration. The Authors give an account of these experiments, in which the tanks were harmonically vibrated. The distribution of dynamic and impulsive pressures on the internal members, end bulkhead, and top of tank is clarified, response curves of the dynamic pressure are obtained, and damping effects of the swash bulkhead, transverse ring, and horizontal girders are quantitatively evaluated. Experimental formulae for dynamic pressure on the immersed parts of the internal members and end bulkheads are used to derive formulae for the total pressure on the members and bulkheads, and it is found that the total pressure on the end bulkhead with the tank 80% full of water is almost the same as the total pressure with the tank completely full. An approximate formula is proposed for the maximum expected value of the total pressure. Order from BSRA as No. 49,401.
